Two letters associated with Charles H. Wheelwright. Written by Wheelwright to the Medical Naval Board in an effort to secure an appointment as a navy surgeon, the first letter contains a brief biography, a summary of his medical school training, and an account of his experience as George C. Shattuck's apprentice in Boston, Mass. The second is a letter of recommendation to the Board of Navy Surgeons written on Wheelwright's behalf by George C. Shattuck, who warmly praises Wheelwright's medical knowledge and strength of character.

A native of Boston, Mass., Charles H. Wheelwright completed his medical training at Harvard University and was a protégé of Dr. George C. Shattuck, a longtime professor of medicine at Harvard. Shattuck (Harvard, M.D. 1835) was professor of clinical medicine at Harvard Medical School from 1855 until 1874, served as dean of the Medical School, and succeeded Oliver Wendell Holmes as visiting physician to the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1849.
